Cancer Support Program

Cancer Treatment at EHC Buffalo

We believe you can increase your personal odds of cancer survival by taking simple health-enhancing steps and adding both complementary cancer therapies and alternative cancer therapies into your mix of treatments.

For example, Hyperbaric Oxygen, curcumin, calorie restriction, melatonin, probiotics, IV therapy, and whole-body hyperthermia have all been shown in research to make chemotherapy work better. It then kills more cells!

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Cancer Treatment Programs

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, HBO, or HBOT, can be an important part of an integrative cancer treatment program. It can increase blood oxygen levels quickly to 100 percent, it can sensitize cancer cells so that more are killed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and it can also reduce the side-effects from both. And, if used with the right diet to break down cancers protective hypoxic pocket, it can even result in oxygen getting inside the cancer cell and killing it. These were not just our research findings but those of a meta-review by two researchers from Bergen, Norway, Ingrid Moen and Linda Stuhr, who analyzed approximately 90 studies since 2006. They found that it weakens the hypoxic pocket that defends cancer tumors from oxygen.

Thus it is useful and complementary to conventional therapies. It is a part of our Integrative cancer treatment program, with PDT and a ketogenic diet or macrobiotic diet.

There is also clear research in a number of studies that Hyperbaric Oxygen increases the uptake of a variety of chemo drugs (like Taxol, carboplatin, and 5FU) in cancers from the lungs to breast, prostate, leukemia, glioma or bone and more. It improves the performance of radiotherapy and Photodynamic Therapy.

At EHC Buffalo Integrative cancer Support program patients have found that a program of 3-5 sessions a week for 8 weeks, boosts blood oxygen levels to 100%. Patients reported sailing through chemo, with no adverse effects.

HBOT as an Adjunct Therapy with Ketogenic Diet

Research published in June 2013 by researchers from the University of South Florida and the Boston College using mice models proved very interesting:

In mice with metastatic cancer and using a Ketogenic Diet and Hyperbaric Oxygen in combination and alone, with control groups, the researchers reported that a “Ketogenic Diet alone significantly decreased blood glucose, slowed tumor progression and increased mean survival time by 56.7% in mice with systemic metastatic cancer. While Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy alone did not influence cancer progression, combining the Ketogenic Diet with Hyperbaric Oxygen elicited a significant decrease in blood glucose, tumor growth rate, and a 77% increase in mean survival times compared to the controls.

So let us be very clear. These highly qualified researchers (Angela M Poff, Csilla Ari, Thomas N Seyfried, and Dr. Dominic P DAgostino) conclude that on its own Hyperbaric Oxygen had no effect on the oxygen-devoid, acidic hypoxic pockets nor on the glucose burning cancer cells. But in combination with a Ketogenic Diet, where the body is starved of glucose, Hyperbaric Oxygen had a significant complementary effect, and it increased survival times. Certainly, that is also what is being shown with chemotherapy. On its own, HBOT does little. Chemo produces better results AND fewer side effects.

High Dose IV Vitamin C and Cancer

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C, ascorbate) has been shown to protect cells against various types of oxidant injury at physiologically relevant concentrations. Vitamin C has been suggested as having both a preventative and therapeutic role in a number of pathologies when administered at much higher-than-recommended dietary allowance levels. Despite some initial skepticism on the use and efficacy of high-dose Vitamin C as an anticancer treatment, some recent findings seem to support such a practice.

Cameron and Pauling reported in 1976 and 1978 that high-dose vitamin C (typically 10 g/day, by intravenous infusion for about 10 days and orally thereafter) increased the average survival of advanced cancer patients and for a small group of responders, survival was increased to up to 20 times longer than that of controls. According to Cameron and Pauling, the results of the use of Vitamin C to extend the life of patients are encouraging. It resulted in increased survival, improved well-being, and reduced pain.

Cancer patients tend to be depleted of vitamin C: fourteen out of twenty-two terminal cancer patients in our phase I study were depleted of vitamin C, with ten of those having zero detectable ascorbates in their plasma. In a study of cancer patients in hospice care, thirty percent of the subjects were deficient in vitamin C. Deficiency (below 10 µM) was correlated with elevated inflammation marker C-reactive protein (CRP) and shorter survival times. Given the role of vitamin C in collagen production, immune system functioning, and antioxidant protection, it is not surprising that subjects depleted of ascorbate would fare poorly in mounting defenses against cancer. This also suggests that supplementation to replenish vitamin C stores might serve as adjunctive therapy for these patients.
